A drift study of vertical distribution and mortality of Engraulis anchoita eggs and larvae. OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P.; de Ciechomski, J.D.; Lasta, C.A.; Guerrero, R.A..
Lagrangian changes in distribution and survival within an anchovy egg and larvae patch were studied by means of multiple opening/closing sampling following a free drifting buoy. The buoy was equipped with a radar reflector and flashing light, and it was connected to a current cross drogue floating at 15 m depth, which corresponded to the main egg and larvae concentration within the patch. The drifter was launched on the Buenos Aires continental shelf, off Necochea during the spring spawning peak of 1983. Three discrete depths (within, below and above the thermocline)were repeatedly sampled close to the drogue with a Motoda sampler. Egg and larval abundances in the vicinity of the drogue were monitored at 3/4 hour intervals for a period of three days. Each...

Abondonce relative et estimation de la biomasse des petits pelagiques des eaux tunisiennes OceanDocs
Hattour, A.; Ben Abdallah, L.; Guennegan, Y..
Within the frame of the National Program (PNM), 'Assessment of Marine Tunisian Resources' (1996-1999), two prospecting surveys on small pelagic fishes, have been led in narrow collaboration with French Institute IFREMER. Their objectives were to specify the relative fishes abundance, their spatial-temporal variability but also to quantify the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) of this resource. A third important goal was to familiarize a Tunisian scientist team, with numerical methods and data processing used during the cruises (reading of echograms, treatments of data, etc.) in stocks assessment. It is known that the indirect stocks assessment methods of small pelagic species is not reliable, reason for which we opted to apply echo - integration techniques....

Acoustic surveys on the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis). OceanDocs
Madirolas, A..
Two joint Argentine-British acoustic surveys specifically targeted on the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) were carried out during September 1994 and 1995. The surveys confirmed the existence of a spawning concentration area located south from San Carlos Strait, in waters south of Malvinas Islands, ASW. The obtained point estimates of blue whiting abundance were 84801 t for the 1994 survey and 140953 t for the 1995 survey. The surveys also provided information on the school structure and behavior as well as some clues about the complex migration pattern of the species.

Análisis de la estratificación empleada en campañas de evaluación de recursos demersales costeros en la Zona Común de Pesca Argentino-Uruguaya y en El Rincón, 1994 OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Lasta, C.A.; Aubone, A..
The data belong to the demersal fishery research cruise H-13/94. Stratification used for research surveys from the catches values was tested, both for the northern area, Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) located between 34° and 39°S, and the southern area situated between 38°30' and 41°30'S (El Rincón, Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina). The variables considered were: croaker and striped weak fish densities and depth. Discriminant factor analysis indicates the formation of two and six strata for the southern and northern areas respectively. The adequate confidential limits of the estimated biomass for each strata obtained for different species, indicate that the criteria for stratification is satisfactory. The number of catches by strata was...

Cañete, G.R.; Dato, C.V.; Villarino, M.F..
Pursuant to SAGyP resolution No. 814/93, during August-December 1995, six INIDEP Fishery Observers trips on board of processing vessels of the Argentine fleet were carried out. They represented 256 navigation days, 232 effective fishing days, 725 fishing trawls and 2,245 trawling hours. Data measured on board were compared to those reported in the fishing log corresponding to the same cruise and submitted to the DNPyA by the Skipper. Catches observed and reported differ by 3985,7 t (28.2. ), with a maximum difference of 1,200 t in a single cruise. In the case of trawling hours, an important fluctuation of values was observed and, in two cases, the number of hours declared exceeded those actually performed (111 and 72). In the other four cruises, between 3...

Distribución estacional y estructura de tallas del abadejo Genypterus blacodes en el Mar Argentino OceanDocs
Villarino, M.F..
The main purpose of this paper is to describe the seasonal distribution and length structure of the Pink cuskeel Genypterus blacodes. Data from surveys carried out between 1973-1989 were used. Basic data included Pink cuskeel densities per haul, catch length structure, depth and haul position. Pink cuskeel distribution was obtained by using the same density ranges for all seasons. A cluster analysis was applied to group the individual length structure of each survey catch. All year long the principal concentrations were within 40° and 48°S. Throughout the year the adults and juveniles were present in San Jorge Gulf, Patagonia, Argentina, so bimodal distribution were obtained. In winter juveniles were located within the sector 37° and 41°S. During autumn,...

Moriondo Danovaro, P..
The study on distribution and abundance of eggs and early planktonic stages of red shrimp, Pleoticus muelleri (Bate, 1888), contributes to a better knowledge of the species dynamics. Results from processing and analyzing 72 plankton samples collected with Bongo net during two research cruises on board of FV “Arbumasa XVIII” and RV “Capitán Oca Balda”, carried out in the Patagonian littoral in March 2008 and January 2009, are presented. In both cruises, eggs and larval stages were found all over the study area. The highest punctual densities of eggs were recorded in the area known as “La Pared” (46° 45’ S-65° 55’ W and 46° 50’ S-65° 55’ W). Eggs indicate the presence of shrimp reproductive concentrations which, while migrating eastwards towards waters of...

Ecological distribution of the shrimp camarao serrinha Artemesia longinaris (Decapoda, Penaeidae) in Fortaleza bay, Ubatuba, Brazil, in relation to abiotic factors OceanDocs
Fransozo, A.; Costa, R.C.; Castilho, A.L.; Mantelatto, F.L..
The spatial and temporal distribution of the shrimp Artemesia longinaris in Fortaleza Bay, northern coast of Sao Paulo State, Brazil, in relation to abiotic factors, was studied. Shrimp samples were obtained on a monthly basis from November 1988 through October 1989 at seven pre-delimited transects on board of a fishing vessel supplied with double otter trawl nets. Depth was recorded at the midpoint of each transect; water and sediment samples were taken to measure salinity, temperature, texture and organic matter content of sediment. The shrimps obtained in the trawls were sorted, identified and 100 g subsample at each transect was separated for measurements (carapace length). A total of 3,083 individuals were obtained. Shrimps were more abundant from...

Estandarización de la captura de centollón (Paralomis granulosa) por trampa con distintos tiempos de pesca en el Canal Beagle, Argentina OceanDocs
Firpo, C.; Wyngaard, J.; Iorio, M.I..
To standardize false king crab catch rates and transform them into abundance indices it is essential to count on a model that adequately describes the relation between catch per trap and fishing time. Considering data derived from research surveys carried out on board of the artisanal fleet in the Beagle Channel, assuming an asymptotic catch trend and absence of escape, to describe the relation an exponential model was applied. The Coo (asymptotic catch) and a (income rate) parameters of the model allowed to build a correction factor to transform the catches obtained with different fishing times into relative abundance indices. The model provides, besides, the optimum time to maximize catches. Para estandarizar las tasas de captura de centollón y...

Patagonian sprat is probably the only pelagic fish species having a considerable biomass within the Argentine Seasouth of 45ºS. There are two populations, the first inhabiting mainly the coastal region around Malvinas Islands and the other close to the coast off Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego Provinces, including the fuegian channels. Some results of two seasonal (autumn and spring) patagonian sprat assessment surveys carried out during 1996 are shown. The autumn cruise covered the area between 50° and 55°S, from the continental coast up to 60 m depth, whereas the spring survey extended upto 90 m depth including Le Maire Strait and part of the Beagle Channel. During both seasons, in waters ranging 6.2 - 8.8°C temperature, the species distributed very...
